• Tough times bogging you down?
  • Life feeling like a series of overwhelming challenges?
  • Feeling drained and exhausted trying to keep up?

It’s safe to say we’ve all been there! The relationship challenges, health challenges, money challenges, kids challenges, work challenges etc. all coming at you one after the other!

When I was in high school (1980s) there was a popular song “When the going gets tough, the tough get going!” by Billy Ocean

I remember it fondly even now. And the message makes so much sense… when life gets tough, we should put in even more energy and keep going and not give in or give up or slow down! We should stay committed and keep pushing through! I agree.

But where do we get that extra energy from when life gets tough and when we feel tired and drained and lost and confused, bitter and angry and out of creativity and resources to keep going, keep pushing?

Over the years I have discovered a different way to handle tough situations…

So here is my one simple tip to help you get through tough times.

When The Going Gets Tough… Step Into Silence!

What? Why? You may ask.

Well, you have probably heard these phrases before…

  • the kingdom of heaven is within
  • the answers you seek are inside you
  • connect to the Divine wisdom within you
  • look inside yourself and find the answers you seek!

I truly believe this.

Even though on the surface it may like leaping into action would be the faster way to handle the different challenges you’ve got going.

But I believe in LEVERAGING the power of SILENCE to get through tough times.

Here are some Benefits of Stepping Into Silence:

  • Silence for centering yourself- taking time to slow down, sit in silence allows you the space between you and your challenges. You are not entangled and enveloped in the problem. In that space there is room to reflect, see things in a broader perspective (instead of a limited one).
  • Silence for clarity – Taking action when you are enveloped in a fog is wasted action. The answers you seek don’t come from a noisy mind. Silence allows you to get calm and peaceful, allow the fog to lift, and help you see the situations with more clarity.
  • Silence for better decision– there is a saying life is a series of decisions and reactions. When you take time to step into silence, you get allow yourself to have better clarity which then allows you to RESPOND to your challenges instead of instantly reacting and regretting!
  • Silence for Better Health- a noisy mind can create a lot of stress. And stress is responsible for all sorts of illnesses and diseases. Taking some quiet time allows peace of mind. A peaceful mind is a far more productive mind too!

The list can go on and on…

As the wise Rumi says –“The quieter you become, the more you are able to hear”.

Of course I believe he’s talking about hearing the voice of God, Spirit, the universe or whatever you wish to call that life force that is the source of everything.

So when the going gets tough, why not access that inner strength from inner silent space which has the answers and solutions that you wish for yourself and your loved ones too instead of trusting your tired, noisy, agitated mind to figure out what to do next!!!

Next time you feel like things are getting tough…Get Silent! Try it! And do comment and let me know what you think or your experience with it.
